Death toll of Taal eruption rises to 3; 82k evacuated to safety

The death toll of Taal eruption rose to three as residents were reported to have died of cardiac arrest while transferring to a safer place after the eruption of Taal volcano early this week on Sunday, January 12.

Meanwhile, more than 80, 000 residents within the 14-kilometer radius permanent danger zone around the volcano were evacuated to safer grounds by the police and military personnel together with Batangas’ local authorities.

Batangas Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (BPDRRM) office identified the fatalities as Anatalia Perez Dionisio and Danilo Toledo. Dionisio is a 65-year-old resident of Barangay Sampaloc, Talisay town while Toledo is a 27-year-old resident of Barangay Laguile, Taal town.

Both of Dionisio and Toledo died from cardiac arrest while fleeting to evacuation centers on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, based on the reports of BPDRRM.

Bauan police identified Antonio Baleros as the new fatality who also died from cardiac arrest after he was evacuated with his family to the Bauan Tech High School from his home in Taal, Batangas.

“According to Mrs Elvira Baleros, wife of Antonio, after dinner, she observed that her husband was coughing and sneezing. A moment later when she returned to the room, she saw her husband lying on the floor, unconscious,” the police report said.

Meanwhile, Brig. Gen. Marceliano Teofilo of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Joint Task Group Taal told reporters on Wednesday that 82,000 people from a total of 18, 664 families were already safely evacuated.
