Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the extension of the country’s lockdown until May 3 in response to the continuous spread of coronavirus in the country. However, important activities may be allowed to resume in some states which have no outbreaks of COVID-19.
Modi requested his countrymen on his televised address on Tuesday to help one another in preventing the spread of the virus which should be done “at any cost.” He also said that the country should be very careful with the expected “hotspots” of the virus.
In his address, he said that it is important for them to keep the unaffected areas of the country free from coronavirus to avoid large-scale infection.
Essential services in India were allowed to operate since the imposition of nationwide lockdown which includes water, electricity, health and fire services, grocery stores, and local government services.
Modi said, “Until May 3, all of us will have to remain in lockdown. During this time, we have to follow the same discipline we’ve been doing.”
The Prime Minister also praised how his country is doing against the coronavirus pandemic “compared to other countries.” He said in his address that he intends to keep it that way.
He attributed his nation’s effective response to COVID-19 to the quick actions taken by the government and the discipline of the people in abiding the country’s swift decisions.
