‘Php500’ is trending in the Philippines right now after the Department of Health called on volunteer doctors, nurses, nurses' assistants and hospital orderlies to the frontline against the COVID-19 for P500 per day or P62.5 per hour.

The DOH posted the application with the full FAQ’s on food, accommodation, and compensation as part of the P27.1 billion package against the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.

The volunteers will be assigned in three referral hospitals: Lung Center, Philippine General Hospital, or Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital and will be on duty for 8 hours for 14 consecutive days.

Netizens showed their dismay in social media after the said announcement of DOH, most of them saying that the compensation is not enough for “putting their lives on the line”.

“DOH paying health workers lower than NCR minimum wage ($10/Php 500) for 8-hour hospital shifts and literally telling them that if you die "after this great contribution to your country” being a “healthcare warrior” against COVID-19, we’ll pay you Php 1 million,” a netizen posted in his timeline.

The Department of Health clarified that food and accommodation for the volunteers will be free, and a P100,000 payout for those who will contract the infection, and P1 million for those who will die, will be given.
