METRO MANILA—A 38 year old Chinese student from Wuhan tested positive of 2019 novel coronavirus, the first case in the Philippines, Francisco Duque said on a press conference Tuesday.

The woman arrived in the Philippines from Wuhan City, the epicenter of the 2019 nCoV on January 21 and sought medical attention on an undisclosed government hospital due to a mild cough.

DOH Secretary Francisco Duque said that the patient is currently in an asymptomatic situation, with no fever and showing no signs of the illness.

“We have activated the incident command system of the said hospital for appropriate management specifically on infection control, case management and containment, ” Duque said.

Duque added that they are also implementing necessary measures to the medical staff of the hospital to halt the spread of the virus.

Duque also urged the public to stay safe and vigilant and adopt a healthy lifestyle.

CDC has yet to determine the dynamics of the transmission of the said virus.

2019 nCoV cases spiked to more than 1,700 cases and have killed 170.
