Fears over the new coronavirus rise as the death toll goes beyond that of the severe acute respiratory syndrome outbreak in 2002 and 2003 in China. In a report from The New York Times, it was confirmed that there had been 361 deaths nationwide which is higher than a total of 349 people that died during the SARS outbreak in mainland China.
Even though the death toll has apparently exceeded SARS outbreak, the fatality rate is relatively low as people infected with the virus showed high rate for recovery. Although this does not guarantee that the virus is under control, these statistics are deemed vital by the China’s Health Commission.
Based on the report of China’s Health Commission on Sunday, there had been 475 recoveries of the 2019 n.CoV. Steady research is conducted to learn more aspects about the virus and how this pandemic can be addressed more effectively. Health experts reveal that the low-rate of fatality encouraged them to work harder to study the virus as it appears to be less deadly than SARS.
China first announced an outbreak of a mysterious pneumonia in the city of Wuhan on Dec. 31. It has been 12 days since the authorities began to place the city and much of the surrounding province of Hubei — home to tens of millions of people — under lockdown on Jan. 23.
